The Residency
There are many ways to learn investment banking or hedge fund finance. There are very few that prepare you for how it actually works. The Residency is a selective educational program for a small number of individuals who want serious preparation for careers in high finance.
100% of participants who pursued institutional finance careers have received finance-related job offers, measured over a long-term horizon rather than immediate post-program hiring. This, however, is not a guarantee. See outcomes →
Access, Not Just Training
This is not a course, even though there is structured training involved. It is not an internship — in any sense — and it is not a job, even though it belongs on your résumé or LinkedIn profile: as professional education, listed as “Swiss Finance Institute Residency — Analyst level” (or Junior Analyst or Associate level).
And it is not designed for mass participation.
The Residency is an immersive educational experience: structured training and intensive, practice-oriented work built to the standards of institutional finance. Participants don’t just study concepts — they practise the craft: building models, writing research, preparing materials, and presenting conclusions under the kind of expectations they will meet in professional life. The standards are high. The margin for error is real.
The Residency exists for one reason: to identify, shape, and pressure-test individuals who may be capable of operating at a professional level in high-stakes financial environments — even if they did not arrive through traditional pedigree pipelines.
Admission is limited. Capacity is fixed. Access is earned.
Education Under Constraint
The Residency is best understood as a practice-based education under constraint. Participants are not “trained” in isolation. They enter a demanding, practice-driven program and expected to develop functional competence through responsibility, repetition, and feedback.
Structured Immersion
You will learn how decisions are made when capital, reputation, and timing are at stake — how institutional environments function, taught through intensive practice rather than lectures alone.
Professional-Grade Work Product
You will build the same kinds of outputs that analysts and associates produce at institutional firms: models, research, and client-style materials, built to a professional standard and critiqued against it.
Continuous Evaluation
You will be evaluated continuously. This is not a safe sandbox. Performance matters. Contribution is expected. Standards are enforced.
The Work of the Program
Participants carry out technical and analytical work modelled on the deliverables of institutional deal teams and investment desks, under close instruction and review.
Mergers & Acquisitions
Financial modeling for acquisition scenarios and merger analyses. Valuation using discounted cash flow, comparable company, and precedent transaction methodologies.
Due-diligence process and information-memorandum preparation. Pitch-material development and presentation.
Capital Markets
How debt and equity financings are documented, structured, and brought to market. Market research and investor-positioning analysis.
Roadshow materials, and how underwriting and syndication work in a capital raise.
Hedge Fund Analysis
Portfolio analysis and investment research. Position monitoring and risk assessment.
Investor reporting, the mechanics of fund administration, and scenario analysis.
Strategic Advisory
Corporate strategy analysis and competitive-positioning research. Market-entry and expansion opportunity assessment.
Financial restructuring and recapitalization planning. Board-quality presentation of strategic recommendations.
Quantitative & AI Methods
Analytical frameworks and data-driven research.
An introduction to systematic approaches and machine-learning applications in finance.
Professional Communication
Memos, pitch materials, confidential information memoranda, and management presentations held to institutional standards.
How deal teams coordinate with legal counsel, accountants, and other advisers — and how to communicate with seniors and clients.
One Program, Three Levels
The Residency serves three experience levels, with coursework and expectations scaled to each. All levels share the same core program; assignments reflect capability and experience. These are learning levels within a paid educational program — not internships, and not jobs.
Junior Analyst
Current undergraduates and recent graduates. Foundational training in financial analysis, modeling, and institutional research practice.
Analyst
Bachelor’s degree holders with baseline technical proficiency. More complex analytical workstreams and expanded responsibility within the program.
Associate
Experienced professionals from finance or adjacent fields. Advanced work engaging strategy, judgment, and cross-disciplinary projects.
Two Tracks
Choose your track upon acceptance. Two tracks are available — one focused on a single discipline, one covering both Investment Banking and Hedge Funds. Tuition and structure differ by track.
Focused Track
5 months 3 months intensive + 2 months flexible
Deep immersion in a single discipline: Investment Banking or Hedge Funds. This choice determines your discipline focus, the type of models you build, the materials you create, and your capstone project.
You cannot switch tracks mid-program. Choose based on your career interests: Investment Banking for M&A advisory and deal work, or Hedge Funds for portfolio management and investment research.
- Deep specialization in your chosen discipline
- Track-specific modeling and deliverables
- A single capstone project in your area
- Optimized for a focused career path
Comprehensive Track
7 months 3 months intensive + 4 months flexible
Both disciplines through a structured rotation. You work on both sell-side (Investment Banking) and buy-side (Hedge Fund) projects, build models for both disciplines, and complete capstone projects in each area.
This dual exposure provides preparation for roles in either area.
- Exposure to both Investment Banking and Hedge Fund work
- Dual modeling capability development
- Two capstone projects across disciplines
- Maximum optionality for career direction
Duration: Approximately 3 months intensive summer, plus additional months in flexible format depending on program track — 5 months in total for the Focused Track and 7 months for the Comprehensive Track. Programs accommodate participants’ schedules and availability. Timing and structure can be adapted to individual circumstances, including academic calendars and other commitments.
Premium Professional Education, Priced Transparently
The Residency is professional education of the kind offered by leading executive-education programs, with one difference: participants learn by doing the work. Like those programs, it carries tuition. We publish it here, in full, so that no one is surprised later.
The Residency is not an internship, and it is not employment. It is an educational program that you enroll in, and tuition is what you pay for it.
Focused Track
Investment Banking or Hedge Funds, chosen upon acceptance.
Comprehensive Track
Investment Banking and Hedge Funds through structured rotation.
Tuition is stated in U.S. dollars and covers the educational program. The Residency’s Junior Analyst, Analyst, and Associate levels describe where you start in the curriculum — they are learning levels, not jobs or internships. For how the Residency’s tuition compares with leading executive-education programs, see the comparison on our home page.
Swiss Finance Institute never charges anyone for an internship or a job — no fee, no tuition, no deposit.
Tuition-bearing courses you enroll in. Not internships, and not employment.
If anyone asks you to pay for an SFI internship or role, it is not from us. Fee policy, last updated 16 September 2026 →
Who This Is For
The Residency is designed for individuals who are intellectually capable and ready to be shaped by a demanding environment.
We seek candidates from diverse backgrounds — whether you bring traditional credentials from leading institutions or are working to develop the discipline and expertise that institutional finance requires. This is not about arriving perfect. It’s about committing to a process where raw potential is refined through real responsibility, structured oversight, and exposure to high-stakes decision-making.
It is also for the under-signaled — those who may not come through connection pipelines, or who lack the conventional résumé markers that open doors. We work with university students and graduates, international applicants, career changers, and professionals who have been excluded from standard pathways despite genuine capability. We evaluate on potential and commitment, not credentials and connections.
Requirements: capacity for immersive work schedules, analytical competence, and professional maturity.

It is for those who understand that real understanding and real experience matter more than another certificate.
